I wasn't particularly impressed with Brady. He threw a ton of very short passes to very open receivers. Yes, he was usually accurate with those short passes, but most were easy throws. As Gruden pointed out at one point in the 2d half, only one of his throws at that point was over 15 yards.

The Bills gave him the underneath stuff all night and stiffened in the red zone. Pats had trouble finishing. But for the stupid fumble, the Bills' strategy would have worked. Pats managed only 13 pts in 54 minutes and then the Bills traded yards for time successfully in that drive when Brady finally managed a 2d half TD.

Although they will feast on lesser opponents, the Patriots are always going to be vulnerable to teams with good pass rushes (i.e. the Giants) unless they develop more of a running game.

Chris,

I love your site, but I think the first link in this post should point to http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/10/happy-feet-how-wes-welker-makes-the-patriots-go/ and not to http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/15/patriots-bills-post-mortem-brady-is-back/

Also, can you recommend a good "for dummies" type book on the strategic side of coaching? Background: I'm starting with only a vague understanding of some of the concepts you discusss and little knowledge of formation/route terminology, etc.

Chris,

That play looks like a smash/levels combo that creates a smash/divide as well, no?

It's probably useful to have a play that a QB can read 3 different ways.
