Best high school nicknames

The (excellent) Andy Staples of did a great bit on high school team nicknames recently. Among the best names Staples pointed out were the Stuyvesant Peglegs, Dunbar Poets, Watersmeet Nimrods, Cary Imps, and, the winner, Cairo Syrupmakers.

As good as this list is, it leaves out some other ridiculous ones from around the country. The best of the rest, as it were, must be the Yuma “Criminals.” I’m serious. Don’t believe me? Watch them enter the game by following two squadcars.

Not to be outdone are the Ribet Academy Fighting Frogs:

Or, maybe my favorite, the Laurel Hill Hoboes:

Here’s the logo for the Watersmeet Nimrods:

Also good are the Live Oak Acorns:

Finally, here is a non-exhaustive list of some other good names:

The Teutopolis, IL Wooden Shoes. It seems Illinois has lots of odd nicknames. Bunnies, Midgets, Pretzels, Appleknockers, Wooden Shoes, etc. Something about my home state is just off. There’s a team near me called the Hiltoppers. That’s right, “hill” with one L.

Tiny Dillon, Montana, seat of Beaverhead County, is home to the Fighting Beavers. The girls’ basketball team is known as the Lady Beavers. Headlines in the weekly paper are often along the lines of “Lady Beavers score early and often in win….” And of course there’s a support club; when I was moving there, the friend helping me insisted we stop and take a picture next to the welcome sign at the edge of town, proclaiming Dillon to be the “Home of the Beaver Boosters.”

    I’m not making this up.
